This artwork was inspired by John Singer Sargent’s celebrated Oyster Gatherers of Cancale. When Ms. Koenig first painted it, she worked from a reproduction in an art book, which rendered the scene much darker than it truly appeared. After viewing the original in Washington, D.C., she saw that the painting was far lighter in person and chose to repaint the entire work to better reflect the original’s true luminosity. Sargent remains one of the most highly regarded American portrait artists.
